I Artists

  • Imar Shepherd

Many artists struggle to establish their musical identity, laboriously trying on different musical styles like a piece of clothing, looking to find what fits. But there are others that emerge fully formed, in full command of their craft, their identity and their music. Omar ‘Imar’ Shepherd fits firmly in the latter category. His soothing music not only generates a calm and relaxing feeling but has had an inspirational and motivational effect on the youths.

A young man who grew up in the parish of St. Thomas, Jamaica, Imar was drawn to music at an early age; singing at church and various community events, but didn’t take music seriously until he was in his early 20’s. He explains, “While working at Tastee, I was invited to perform at the annual Christmas party. Based on my performance, I received an automatic invitation to all company sponsored events, , Beach trips and company funerals. The coordinator told me I had what it takes to be a star, a diamond in the rough, and from then I began this musical journey.” His first big break came as lead singer for the touring band Crucial' that performed weekly at the Market Place on Red Hills Road in Kingston. Subsequently, he began working as a solo artiste during which he was a guest artiste on the popular Tastee Talent Search Concert for two (2) years.

As he ventured deeper into the music industry in the birthplace of reggae music, Kingston, Jamaica, the pieces began to fall into place for Imar. In 2010, he hooked up with singer, songwriter and local producer, Demarco for Rebel Music. The two recorded and released the single “Woman I need You” in collaboration with House of Reggae in Canada. The single received heavy rotation both locally and internationally, and sparked major interest across the world from Europe, United States, Canada and the Caribbean. Riding the wave of his recent success, Imar has taken to the studio working with some of the most notable producers in the reggae music industry, Demarco - Rebel Music, Digital B, St Bess Records, Calibud Music and J Islands, just to name a few.

Now recording in earnest, Imar has become an avid songwriter, taking his influences, like Dennis Brown, Bob Marley, Beres Hammond, and using them to shape his own style. “I love to see people happy,” Imar explains, “Music is a tool that brings happiness to many people.” When he is not recording in the studio, Imar is on the road honing his on - stage presence and sharing his love for the music in his own style. “Doing the shows gives me the opportunity to interact with people. It gives me joy and it’s an opportunity to put forth the brand. Many times you are able to refine your selections based on the fans reaction.”

Imar is definitely on the rise. He is taking his share of the music industry with his soulful and humble personality. Many are saying this new reggae sensation has been given the reggae baton and is ready to take on the marathon reggae road routes.

  • Inner Vision

If you have had any doubt that love and music walk hand in hand, then you have yet to see and hear the Inner Visions Band. Their music has garnered them fans the world over and has helped to close the gap between racial, religious and economic divisions by leaning on the one thing we all possess and should exercise. That one thing is love!

Hailing from St. John, US Virgin Islands, this once hidden treasure, is a family in every sense of the word (two Brothers and two Sons). Yet everyone they encounter is easily welcomed into their family as well. At a time when “Roots Reggae Music” is struggling to keep its identity intact, it is quite refreshing to find this band performing, recording and producing as well as they do. Melodic song writing, impassioned lead vocals and sweet three part harmonies are reminiscent of the best vocal groups of the seventies and indeed, their style bridges the gap between foundation reggae and other genres such as R&B, and rock.

From Grassroots Festival in New York, Antiliansse festen in Belgium, SXSW in Texas, Reggae Summer Nights in Hamm, Germany, Sierra Nevada World Music Festival in California, Dios Latinos Festival in Holland to Muzikfest in Pennsylvania, Inner Visions has blazed the trail!

Now it’s your turn to be “Inner-Gized!” Catch them live at home or on tour this Summer!

    Core members:
Phillip “Grasshopper” Pickering (lead vocals, guitar, percussion)
Alvin “Jupiter” Pickering (backing vocals, bass, percussion and Grasshopper’s
Akiba “Mr. Snooze” Pickering (vocals, keyboards and one of Grasshopper's sons)
Aswad “Hollywood” Pickering (drums and another of Grasshopper's sons).

Music Industry Professionals and Critics alike have commented:
…..“Straight up reggae as it should be played!” …..”A small band with the sound of a symphony!” …..“Most felt lucky to have been in the room to witness masters at work!” .…“It doesn’t get any better than this!"….“what modern Roots music should sound like!”

  • Iyah Gift

With his original style being a fusion of the music of the African diaspora, IYah-gift’s unique flavour echoes traces of reggae, traditional African rhythms and hip hop, to create a mind blowing synthesis of sound. Born in West Africa to a Jamaican father and a Nigerian mother, IYah-gift’s love for creating music was first influenced by the artists his parents loved, including Fela Kuti, Bob Marley, and Louis Armstrong.

After moving to Jamaica at age 10 and then to the United States at 16, he grew to appreciate artists like Sizzla, Lauryn Hill, and the Wu-Tang Clan. Gift developed a love for, and the skill to create explosive lyrical word play and rhythms that speak to the heart. He began writing poetry at a young age, and as he got older, this wordsmith began to combine poetry and music, he became a freestyle genius, creating extemporaneous lyrics that awed his audiences at rap ciphers and performances. It has been said by Bunny Wailer that Gift’s music comes from the heart: “His music is breezy, his lyrics are sharp, and his stage presence is comforting and inviting.” He seems to shine a light that attracts all to listen, dance and simply feel good. Junior Reid expressed that “Iyah-gift is a talented musician and artist. I have had the pleasure of working with him; and several of my sons have recorded at his studio. The future of Jamaican music will be bright with young talent like IYah-gift.”

A talented song writer and producer, he operates his own studio in Kingston, Jamaica; where he is the founder and C.E.O. of the One Hart Music production company. Gift has produced songs for himself and other artists including, Rasta Zilion, Pampi Judah, Culture Dan, K-Lyrikal, Calice Earth, Toppa Bling, Skippa, Arsenal, Andrew Blood, Illmatic, YMG, Heru, Lion Cub, and Israel Voice to name a few. Artists have been known to enjoy working with him, because the originality and diversity that are characteristic of his beats allowing singers and songwriters freedom of creativity. IYah-gift’s musical creations are an amalgam of black music at its finest, a unique genre that is different but “feels” familiar at the same time.

IYah-gift was recently recorded on the Grove Rhythm produced by Casper. Also on this rhythm are Beenie Man, Movado, Erupt, Gyptian and more. The single “Bounce and Roll” is slated for release in May 2012. It is fresh and hypnotic, with that touch of positivity that is signature of IYah-gift. Other releases to look forward to from IYah-Gift in May 2012 include “Da MastaPeace” produced by Makonnen (Maki-B) and “When You’re Around,” self-produced by IYah-Gift. He is also currently recording songs with producers Sigh Griffin, and Analog Arts.
Gift says that he expresses his life experiences and feelings through music, he wants others to share and relate. He believes firmly that by changing minds we can change the world. “Control the mic like it’s attached to wrist, ever focused on the works that I must accomplish like repatriation the building of the nation, schools and hospitals with the right vegetation.” This young artist is a phenomenon. Look out for his upcoming work. His truth and light are infectious. His music is honest and sincere, and far from mundane. He has a way of speaking to your soul.
